The revolution in Bulgaria in 1989 led to the fall of the communist regime under Todor Zhivkov after mass protests and unrest took up the demand for democracy and freedom of expression in Bulgaria. This led to the formation of an interim government, free elections and the start of political change towards democracy and a market economy.
